In August 2021, a water main break at Stern Grove caused a major slope failure at Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove (locally called Stern Grove). AGS and our JV Partner, Kennedy Jenks, were deployed by SFPUC and SFRPD under one of several emergency contracts to repair, clean up, and restore the affected slope.
AGS was tasked to provide geotechnical engineering services as an emergency response for this project. AGS’ geotechnical group along with AGS’ civil group worked hand-to hand to develop the most reliable, efficient mitigation measure.
The project was fast-tracked as the park needed the construction to be completed ahead of the annual Stern Grove Festival. Additionally, the existing retaining walls were noted as historically significant, so the reconstruction of the damaged retaining wall needed to be constructed with the same material.
Working closely with our partners, the area was reopened to the public for the 2022 festival season.
