This safety area project was funded through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program [AIP] for capital improvements at airports from taxes received from passenger tickets and aviation fuel.

Client: Port of Oakland/Oakland International Airport
Location: Oakland, CA

A $13 million AIP grant to Oakland International Airport provided for several airfield capital improvement projects, two security-related projects and a sound insulation project.

OIA will repave an end section of the main commercial runway; make airfield pavement improvements at North Field [used mainly by general and corporate aviation]; make airfield pavement improvements at South Field [the commercial airfield]; and continue soundproofing homes on Bay Farm Island in Alameda.

AGS initially provided the services of a senior cost estimator for various elements of the Runway Safety Area improvement project. The estimator provided conceptual cost evaluations of the drainage system.

AGS staff were tasked to perform geotechnical studies for both North Field and South Field. The studies included field exploration including eight days of drilling and five days of CPT, laboratory testing, and preparation of a final report with conclusions and recommendations.
